Artist Statement

In conceiving a concept for a painting, I work to establish a connection with my creative ideas and the world that surrounds me. The most gratifying outcomes of my work appear when people continually discover new images and ideas as their minds process what they see. I feel this creates a connection and resonates with their personal experiences.
Aside from my own creations, my conceptual strength has been developed through commissions. I interview a client and get to know their interests. I start with these ideas and expand with my own interpretation. This iterative, interpretive, and immersive process is expressed through multiple layers of various media.
The earliest influences upon my work came from wooden spheres my father painted with Persian carpet designs as well as the abstract paintings of Michael Tichansky hung in my fathers home. Both of these influences are, in one form or another abstract. Growing up surrounded by nature through my mother's landscaping career has also become a huge presence in my work.
Later, my interest in music further developed my visual language. My mind had begun to process and interpret musical ideas onto canvas. These ideas translate through texture, color, line, and shape.
As my work has evolved I find myself focusing on the textural and tonal qualities of space within divided sections. This adds to the line work within a painting by allowing some spaces to breathe. While maintaining the ‘controlled chaos’ of my work the viewer is brought through many different levels in
an image.

My undergraduate work as an illustrator has taught me that an artist can
act as a visual journalist. All of these stories are bound by a common visual philosophy vocabulary that is constantly evolving. In the future I intend to utilize commercial and residential venues as a way to spread my ideas to people.
